Utah – Transcontinental Railroad Grades

Transcontinental Railroad Grades

Good evening

A long time ago I became interested in joining a local 4-wheel drive club due to my interest in exploring areas with my first 4×4, a 1988 Toyota 4Runner. There were only a few clubs in the area at the time. The main clubs were Big Horn, Desert Trackers, Red Rock 4-Wheelers, and Wasatch Outlaw Wheelers. I ultimately decided to join the Wasatch Outlaw Wheelers. I was an active member for several years and slowly lost interest due to life in general, jobs, Wife, Kids ect. I didn’t abandoned the hobby, I just didn’t have as much time to participate in the activities.

Fast forward to October 2022 and low and behold my interest in exploring and off-roading are still near & dear to my heart. You could spend a lifetime exploring Utah and all it has to offer.

As  coincidence would have it, I was talking with some collogues at work that shared similar interests and discovered that a few of the 4×4 clubs from yesteryear still existed so I decided to look into joining another club. I soon found out  that Wasatch Outlaw Wheelers  still existed and some of the original members were still around.

I attended one of the club meetings and ultimately was invited to one of the club runs, hence the title, Trans continental railroad grades.

Some of the old ghost towns we passed through were Kelton, Zias, Peplin, Ombey, Romola, Matlin, Red Dome, Terrace, Watercress & Lucin.

This post is a snapshot of the trail run and by no means a definitive guide to the area. Utah is very rich in history and will keep you busy for a long, long time.
