Newfoundland Mountains
This trip spawned rather quickly. I had called fellow cacher Desert Dawg (Marlin) the day before to ask him about a cache I was looking for. During our conversation he mentioned that he and Cache MACS (Mike) were heading to the west desert the following morning to check on one of Dawg’s caches and asked if I was interested. I said I surely was but that I needed to check with the boss before I commit.
I called UTDirtrider (Terry) to see if he was interested and he was reluctant at first until he heard of where we were going and then he was all in! We all rendezvoused at Bear River Co-OP in Corrine at 0600. From there we traveled about 22 miles on pavement before the dirt road started. We traveled another 55 miles to the staging area. We unloaded the quads around 08:30 and headed out.
All this time Marlin had an agenda that neither Terry or myself knew about, Mike knew but assumed that Terry and I knew about it. That agenda was to climb to the top of Desert Peak. Marlin briefly mentioned the peak while we were getting the Deadmans Knoll cache, He asked if we were intimidated by the distance to the peak which none of us were.
This was a great trip in which we logged more than 120 miles on the Quads and 240 miles on the way out there and back in the vehicles.
Most images were shot with my Samsung Galaxy S5 phone. I wish I would have brought momma’s Olympus TG-1 along as I ran out of battery and missed a few good shots.
UPDATE: at the time I knew little of the area. I was recently looking for new places to explore and came across a few articles on Utah’s ghost towns. One in particular looked familiar to me, Boston Terrace. The area near Desert Peak with the old structures and mining equipment was an old mining camp. A Google search will bring up some decent info on Boston Terrace.
A great trip
